Discovering Crete: An Overview of Our 5-Day Adventure

Day one takes you to the heart of the Minoan culture. In the afternoon, you’ll explore the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and wrap up the day by immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional market and enjoying a delicious locally sourced dinner.

On day two, you venture to Rethymno to discover the traces of Venetian influence. You’ll see the countryside around Rethymno as well as explore the town of Rethymno itself in all its glory.

Day three is all about hippie caves and beaches. You’ll start with the famous Matala Caves, known for their unique rock formations and hippie history. Then, visit a local herb shop near Kouses to discover the rich variety of local herbs and natural products. Then enjoy the myriad of beautiful beaches southern Crete has to offer.

Day four awaits you in Chania, where we’ll embark on a scenic hike and afterward, relax at Seitan Limania Beach, surrounded by stunning cliffs and crystal-clear waters. In the evening, wander through the charming Old Town and the delicious culinary world of Chania.

On the final day, you’ll explore the rugged beauty of western Crete. Enjoy the famous Elafonisi Beach, with its pink sand and pristine waters. Discover a hidden gem on the western coast and unwind at the golden sands of Falasarna Beach and a dinner with a jaw-dropping view.

Day 3: Hippie Caves and Southern Beaches

The first stop is the famous Matala Caves and beach. In the 70’s, hippies used to live in these caves which are now abandoned, but they still tell the story of their past. Joni Mitchell even stayed here and wrote a song called “Carey”  about it. The beach has crystal-clear waters and a bit further along the side of the cliff, people do cliff jumps from 20-26 feet (6-8m).

Botano Herb Shop Near Kouses

For a different kind of exploration, we recommend a visit to the Botano Herb Shop near Kouses. This hidden gem offers a wide selection of local herbs and natural products. It’s a cute little shop filled with aromatic scents and traditional remedies used in Cretan cuisine and traditional medicine. Take home a piece of Crete’s healing heritage.

Frangokastelo Beach

Nestled along Crete’s southeastern coast, Frangokastello beach stands as a picturesque haven, renowned for its soft, golden sands and tranquil turquoise waters. The beach’s main attraction is the Frangokastello Castle, a Venetian fortress that adds a touch of historical intrigue to this idyllic coastal retreat.

Triopetra Beach

As the day progresses, make your way to Triopetra Beach. Known for its stunning sunsets, this tranquil beach is the ideal spot to relax and unwind. Take a leisurely stroll along the shore, enjoy breathtaking views, and be mesmerized by the beauty of the landscape. The beach is also known for the 3 large rocks extending into the water and they make for a great picture.

Preveli Beach

Continue your exploration with a visit to Preveli Beach. Its palm-tree-lined river and beautiful surroundings create a picturesque setting. Take a dip in the refreshing waters or simply bask in the natural beauty. This beach is a true gem that offers a different landscape from all the other beaches. You can also trek along the river in the palm tree forest. However, you should know that the hike down to the beach may be difficult on a hot summer day. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and drink lots of water!

Damnoni Village With Its Multiple Beaches

Our journey leads us to the peaceful Damnoni village, known for its multiple beaches. Each beach offers a unique experience, from secluded coves to pristine stretches of sand. Embrace the peaceful ambiance and soak up the sunshine.

Dinner at Taverna Violakis

No day in Crete is complete without indulging in the island’s delicious traditional cuisine. For dinner, we recommend Taverna Violakis in the Damnoni village. Delight in authentic Cretan dishes made from the freshest local ingredients. Experience the flavors of the region and savor a memorable culinary journey.

Day 4: Experience Chania to the Fullest

Hike From Gouverneto Monastery to Katholiko Bay

One of the highlights of day four is the scenic hike from Gouverneto Monastery to Katholiko Bay. This hike offers breathtaking landscapes and takes you through historical sites where there were battles during WW2 and where you can still see the remnants of Greek monasteries in the caves and sides of the cliff. You will walk through the yard of the Gouverneto monastery and women will have to cover their shoulders.

Seitan Limania Beach

Another must-visit location is Seitan Limania Beach. With its crystal clear waters and stunning cliffs, this beach offers a picturesque setting for relaxation and exploration. The drive down to the beach is very steep but offers good views. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Explore the Old Town and Harbour of Chania

After north Chania, it is time to explore the charming Old Town and harbor of Chania itself. Wander through the narrow alleyways, admire the beautiful Venetian architecture, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Take a stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the charming cafes and shops.

Dinner at Mikro Kelari Restaurant

To end the day on a delicious note, we recommend having dinner at Mikro Kelari Restaurant. We especially liked it for its delicious vegan meatballs and generous portions, this restaurant offers a fantastic dining experience in the heart of Chania.

Day 5: The Rugged Beauty of Western Crete

Our first recommendation is the famous Elafonisi Beach, known for its unique pink sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. This beach offers a picturesque setting, surrounded by natural beauty and a tranquil atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. You can spend hours here but be careful as there is no shade! If you stroll along the beach to the end of the small peninsula, you can see the ruins of a small monastery on top of the mountain and a cave with a memorial to the 600 Greeks who fled to the peninsula from the Turks.

If you’re a nature lover, be sure to visit the Voulolimni Rock Pool. Tucked away on the rocky shore, this hidden gem offers a refreshing swimming experience in a breathtaking setting. The water is pristine and turquoise blue.

Falasarna Beach

Another stunning beach on our list is Falasarna Beach. With its golden sands, crystal clear waters, and dramatic landscapes, this beach is a must-visit. Take a stroll along the shore, enjoy a beach picnic, or simply bask in the beauty of your surroundings.

Pre-dinner Snack or Cocktail at Playa Paraiso

Before heading to dinner, we recommend stopping by Playa Paraiso for a pre-dinner snack or cocktail. This beachfront bar offers stunning views of the sea and a relaxed atmosphere. Treat yourself to a refreshing drink and make sure to try the artichoke dip!

Dinner at Taverna Spilios

For a memorable dining experience, we suggest having dinner at Taverna Spilios. Known for its delicious Cretan cuisine, this restaurant offers a delightful menu showcasing the flavors of the island. Indulge in traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, and savor the true essence of Cretan culinary culture. It is situated on the side of the mountain and offers an amazing view of the sunset. Make sure you book a table or get there early as the good seats fill up quickly.

Komolithi Nature Reserve

If you have time and energy, end your day with a touch of adventure and visit the Komolithi Nature Reserve. This scenic spot features unique rock formations that have been shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. Take a leisurely hike through the reserve and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Samaria Gorge Hike

The legendary Samaria Gorge Hike is renowned as one of the most impressive gorges in Europe. This breathtaking trail spans 16 kilometers within the Samaria National Park, taking you through towering cliffs, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes. It showcases the natural beauty of Crete as you traverse this iconic route and encounter unique flora and fauna along the way. The hike requires you to have a reasonable fitness level and will take the better part of the day. So make sure you plan accordingly.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge and Waterfall

Located in the southern part of Crete, this majestic gorge offers a stunning backdrop for nature lovers. It is a small hike down to the river and you’ll need to get wet to see the waterfall. Bring a swimsuit but be warned that the water is freezing!

Ntounias Restaurant

This was one of the best restaurants we went to in Crete. Tucked away in the picturesque village of Drakonas, this charming restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They offer a variety of local dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients and everything is cooked on the fire. From mouthwatering goat dishes to heavenly vegetarian options, Ntounias Restaurant is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the rich culinary traditions of Crete. You will feel like you’re eating at your grandma’s place.
